Posting regularly and still getting a handful of likes is frustrating. The good news is that social media reach is not really about posting more. It is about posting things your audience actually cares about, in the formats each platform favours, and giving the best posts a small push.
Choose one or two platforms and do them well
Spreading yourself across five platforms usually means doing all of them badly. For B2B services, LinkedIn is often the best place to start. For local businesses and consumer brands, Instagram and Facebook tend to work better. Pick where your customers already spend time and commit to it for at least three months.
Post content people want to save and share
Algorithms reward posts that get saved, shared and commented on. Those are usually posts that teach something, solve a small problem or tell a real story. A few formats that consistently perform well for service businesses:
- Quick tips and checklists your audience can use straight away
- Before-and-after results or short case studies
- Answers to the questions customers ask you every week
- Behind-the-scenes posts that show the people behind the business
- Honest opinions on common myths in your industry
Use short video
Short vertical video gets more reach than almost any other format right now on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and increasingly LinkedIn. It does not need to be polished. A clear phone video of you explaining one useful idea in under a minute often beats an expensive graphic.
Make the first line count
People decide whether to stop scrolling in about a second. Open with the problem, the result or a surprising point, not with your company name. Then keep captions easy to read with short lines and one clear takeaway.
Engage, do not just broadcast
Reply to every comment, ask questions in your posts and spend ten minutes a day commenting thoughtfully on other people’s posts in your industry. Platforms show your content to more people when they see real conversations happening around it.
Be consistent rather than constant
Three good posts a week, every week, will grow your reach more than daily posting for two weeks followed by silence. A simple monthly content calendar makes this much easier to stick to.
Put a little budget behind your best posts
When a post performs well organically, it is a strong sign that it will work as an ad too. Boosting your best content to a carefully targeted audience is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend reach. Our Meta Ads management service uses exactly this approach.
Measure what actually matters
Reach and likes are nice, but what you really want to know is whether social media is bringing in enquiries. Track profile visits, link clicks, direct messages and leads that mention social media. Those numbers tell you what to do more of.
